│1.0 About DJPMenu │
└──────────────────┘
DJPMenu is a program that remotely changes settings on HP DeskJet Portable
printers and HP DeskJet 300/400 Series printers for the DOS environment. It
requires MS-DOS version 3.1 or later with 80 columns by 25 lines of text
display (colour or monochrome). In addition, DJPMenu requires a direct
connection to the printer via the parallel port of your computer. It will
not work through the serial port, or through any network, or if any print
spooler (such as DOS PRINT) is installed.
┌────────────┐

│1.3 Installation and Execution │
└───────────────────────────────┘
To install, insert the disk into drive A and type install.
To run DJPMenu, change directory to C:\DESKJET and type DJPMENU at
the DOS prompt. You can also specify an option for the printer port
in the following format.
DJPMENU /pX where X can be: 1 - LPT1, 2 - LPT2 or 3 - LPT3
DJPMenu will query the printer for the current settings and display
them on the screen. To speed up the query process, use the command
DJPMENU /tX where 'X' is a number from 1 to 33. X multiplied by 5ms
represents the waiting time.
For example: DJPMENU /p2 /t1
specifies the printer is connected to port 2 and 5ms waiting time
for each query.
┌────────────┐
│2.0 Services│

│3.0 Function Keys│
└┬────────────────┴─────────────────────────┐
│3.1 Dis/charge Battery Activation (F2-Key)│
└──────────────────────────────────────────┘
Discharge or quick charge the battery.
If a battery is installed and the power adapter is not connected or is
turned off, you can activate the discharge process by pressing the F2 key.
The battery cannot be discharged if the power adapter is turned on.
Note: Nickel-cadmium batteries lose their charge capacity if they have been
recharged multiple times without being fully discharged. It is a good practice
to fully discharge the battery and then charge it fully once a month to maintain
its performance.
If a battery is installed and the power adapter is connected, you can
activate the quick battery charge by pressing this key. Refer to the
section on 'Quick Charge Battery Activation' for more details.

┌─────────────────────┐
│4.0 Printer Settings │
└┬─────────────────┬──┘
│4.1 Print Quality│
└─────────────────┘
Print quality controls the sharpness and clarity of the printed type.
Draft quality prints faster and saves ink by using fewer
dots to print the character. Use Letter quality for the best
printouts.
┌───────────────┐
│4.2 Orientation│
└───────────────┘
Select portrait or landscape orientation.
┌─────────────┐
│4.3 Font Size│
└─────────────┘
Select the default font. 'Normal' prints text in 12-point Courier at
10cpi while 'Compressed' prints text in 12-point Courier at 16.67cpi.
┌──────────────┐
│4.4 Paper Size│
└──────────────┘
Select the paper size: US Letter, Legal, A4 and US Executive.
┌──────────────┐
│4.5 Paper Type│
└──────────────┘
Select the paper type: plain paper, transparency, glossy paper and
premium inkjet paper.
┌────────────────┐
│4.6 Paper Source│
└────────────────┘
Select automatic loading with the sheet feeder or manual loading.
┌──────────────┐
│4.7 Text Scale│
└──────────────┘
When text scale is off, the default line spacing for printing on
Letter-size page is 6 lines per inch, giving 63 lines on a page
(if perforation skip is off).
By turning text scale on, the printer adjusts the line spacing so
that 66 lines can fit on the page.
┌────────────────────┐
│4.8 Perforation Skip│
└────────────────────┘
A default top margin of 1/2 inch will be set if this is on. If this
is set to off, a default top margin of 0 inch will be set.
┌──────────────┐
│4.9 Sleep Time│
└──────────────┘
Determine the period of inactivity before the printer switches
to sleep mode to conserve power. The printer returns to the
normal operating mode when data is received or when any of the
printer buttons are pressed.
┌───────────────────┐
│4.10 Power Off Time│
└───────────────────┘
Determine the period of inactivity before the printer powers
off automatically.
This determines the amount of time that the printer will wait
starting from non-activity before it powers off automatically.
You can choose from 5, 10, 20 minutes or never.
┌───────────────────────────────┐
│4.11 Carriage Return Definition│
└───────────────────────────────┘
Define how the printer interprets the <CR> character, either
as it is (i.e. <CR>) or 2 characters (i.e. <CR><LF>).
┌──────────────────┐
│4.12 Character Set│
└──────────────────┘
Select the character set to use.
┌──────────────────────┐
│4.13 Input Buffer Size│
└──────────────────────┘
Select the input buffer size. You may want to increase the buffer
size to 48K when using DOS applications so that the computer
takes a shorter time to send the document to the printer.
If you are using a Windows application the recommended buffer size
is 16K, for optimal printing speed.
┌────────────────────────┐
│4.14 Graphics Resolution│
└────────────────────────┘
Select the default graphics resolution.
┌─────────────────────┐
│4.15 Country Defaults│
└─────────────────────┘
Select the character set and paper size by country.

can communicate with an IrDA compliant device. If it is
disabled, no communication protocol is used.
┌────────────────┐
│4.17 Packet Size│
└────────────────┘
Set the packet size for transmission. A larger packet
size works best for most situations. However, if you experience any
communication problem, select a smaller packet size.
┌───────────────────┐
│5.0 Troubleshooting│
└───────────────────┘
When DJPMenu encounters any problem, it will display an error message
and give the possible solutions.
If your PC is properly connected to a supported HP DeskJet printer,
the problems you may encounter while using DJPMenu are likely to be
communication problems.
The possible causes of failure in communication between the PC and
printer are as follows:
(a) Printer - printer not turned on;
printer not online;
printer is busy;
printer is out of paper or other error conditions.
(b) Cable - cable not securely connected;
cable connected to the wrong printer port;
a printer switchbox is used;
a nonstandard centronics cable is used;
cable is faulty.
(c) Computer - a spooler such as PRINT is installed;
wrong port is specified in DJPMenu
printer port is faulty.
